"CHRISTOPHE WEIDMANN" = VIOLA
Born in 1979 in Metz (France), Christophe Weidmann received his First Prize in Viola, Music Theory and Chamber Music with distinction in 1997 at the METZ conservatory of music.He continued his musical education in Paris under Sabine Toutain, under Jean Baptiste Brunier, and Pierre Henry Xuereb, obtaining professional qualification with distinction.
In 2004, he worked with Tobby Hoffman and Teemu Kupiainen at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. He also attended several master classes with reknown viola players such as Youri Bashmet, Gerard Causse, Hatto Bayerle, and Nobuko Imai. Christophe Weidmann finished his viola education in 2006 graduating from Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique de Paris CNSM in the class of P.H.Xuereb.
Currently, Christohe Weidmann is a well-established professional, working as a principal viola in the North Netherland Orchestra. He has also worked as the leader of the violas in numerous orchestras, including Orchestre de l’Aube, Orchestre de Bretagne, Orchestre de Centre Tours (France), Brussels Philharmonics (Belgium) and Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra (Sweden).
Christophe is also an accomplished soloist, giving viola recitals and performing with orchestras. His repertoire includes Mozart “Sinfonia Concertante”, Bach Brandenburg Concerto, Telemann Viola Concerto, Arpegionne Sonata (version with orchestra), Britten Lachrimae. Christophe also specializes in contemporary music and has been invited to give a Dutch premiere of Yusupov Viola Concerto (piece written originally for Maxim Vengerov) in October 2010.
In addition, Christophe enjoys playing chamber music and have received several diplomas with distinction in this field performing with the Velasquez Quartet, Hesiode quartet. He is performing with Yehonatan Berick, Peter Frankl, Simone Feyrabend, Philippe Muller, Patrick Messina, Anne Claude Villars, Jean Baptiste Brunier, Pierre Henry Xuereb, Cyril Huve, David Ehrlich, among others. He is also a frequent guest at some of the greatest European festivals, including Festival de Giverny, “La chaise Dieu”, “Bormes les Mimosas”, “Claviers en Poitou”, “Josquin des Pres” (France), Ameropa (Prague), Jäärvenpää Sibelius Festival...
Apart from his performing career, Christophe is also an experienced violin and viola teacher. He has taught at “Ecole du Marais” in Paris in 2003 and has been offered a prestigious teaching position at the Virginia Tech, university of Virginia Blacksburg (USA)
Christophe is a multifaceted musician. He performs on various period instruments such as baroque viola, viola d’amore, and quinton, and experiments with electric violin and viola. Most recently, he has taken up a course in violin making and has just finished his first instruments.
